I especially love writing about this. Making a website is a creative endeavour and anything creative has a way of showing you things about yourself you didn’t previously know, not to talk about the fact that you must gain at least one new skill on every creative project.

How to make a website

So creating a website these days is not as complicated as it used to be. Now we can build dynamic and responsive sites without having to write a line of code – THAT IS GOOD NEWS – for people like me at least.

Another thing with how to make a website these days is that it does not have to be expensive and time consuming. If you are still in doubt, then read on! Surely you will be convinced that these words are true by the time you get to the end.

There are but three steps to building the website of your dreams

#1 CHOOSE YOUR PLATFORM

#2 BUY A DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING PLAN

#3 CUSTOMIZE YOUR SITE

Again this may be sounding too good to be true but we are not at the good part yet – read on.

#1 CHOOSE YOUR PLATFORM

How to make a website

There are a couple of platforms you could use to build your site. In this article I would be recommending WordPress because this system is just awesome. Before we toot WordPress’ horn, we should know that other similar platforms include Joomla, and Drupal – Let us look at the stats.

Websites which use Joomla – 7%

Websites which use Drupal – 18%

Websites which use WordPress – 50%

It is a no brainer who wins in this contest. In the past, you needed to know how to code in order to build a site and even today there are platforms which require you to know a bit of HTML in order to use them; WordPress isn’t one of those platforms. In WordPress, we have an easy, flexible platform which anyone can understand and manipulate into creating world class sites in minutes.

ADVANTAGES OF WORDPRESSHow to make a website

MOBILE RESPONSIVE – By building with WordPress, you automatically get a site which looks good on any device., Since more people access websites using mobile phones and tablets than PCs, a site which works well on a mobile display makes a better appeal.

FREE – You do not have to pay a dime in order to use WordPress. It is a free platform which is accessible to everybody

NO CODING – We cannot stress this enough. You can start and complete a WordPress site without writing one line of code. If you write code, you can still write those codes in WordPress so you see, it fits all kinds of website builders.

#2 BUY A DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING PLAN

How to make a website

At first even I didn’t know what this meant and I asked around. I will explain these so that you can easily get it. When you want to get online, you need an Identity. The same way you have a name you answer to when you are called, your website must have a name which others can call up and find you online – is that simple enough? An example of a domain name is something like the following:

 www.yoursitename.com

These names do not come free anyway; you buy them from online merchants. What happens is this;

1. You go online to the merchants and search for your domain name. The purpose of the search is to be sure that another person isn’t already using it. You see, we cannot have more than one apple.com or www.wordpress.org on the internet.

2. When you confirm your name is available, you then pay for it and this payment is renewed yearly. Some providers have options whereby you can pay for domains 2, 3, or 4 years at a time.

The fee sometimes differs depending on whether you are buying a .com or .net or .org. Godaddy is a master in the art of selling domain names and you can buy from them at the best rates available on the internet. Visit them with this link https://godaddy.com

To create a website, the domain name is part of a two-part process and the second is getting a hosting plan. In simple terms, a website is a compilation of files into pages which are stored on a server. The hosting plan gives you a space on the internet where your own website files can be stored. This means you need a host in order to even begin creating a website. Some wonderful hosting providers online are:

1. Bluehost

2. Hostgator

3. inMotionHosting

It is important to know that there are various hosting packages and they are also renewed on yearly bases.

#3 CUSTOMIZE YOUR SITE

How to make a website

This is where the fun really begins. Once your host is set up, making a website really begins to take shape. The easiest way forward is to make use of the One Click Installation for WordPress and all the host providers mentioned above offer that for free.

When you set up hosting, you are given access to something called a cpanel. The procedure is simple

  • log in to your hosting account
  • look for ‘One click installs’ or ‘Softaculous apps installer’
  • Click on ‘WordPress’
  • Select the domain you want to install it on
  • Choose your WordPress Username and password
  • Click install

The process takes no longer than a minute and you are all set.

INSTALLING A THEME

Look for appearance ad click on ‘Themes’. WordPress offers free and basic themes (usually named following the year of release, e.g.TwentyFourteen, TwentyFifteen etc.)

On clicking Themes, you can click on ‘Add New’ and the above screen will display. You have various options depending on what you feel suits your site better.

Once you select a theme, you can further preview it. If you like what you see, you then download and activate it.

POSTS

These are used when you have something like a news article or basically any article to publish on your site. When you create posts, it is in a way like you are publishing a blog. Users can comment, and it is in reverse chronological order (the latest post shows up first to viewers)

PAGES

These are used when you have more consistent information which you do not want to move around on your site. An example of a page would be ‘About Us’. You want such information to be in the same place whenever a user comes to your site and when you have such information. They are better published as pages and not posts. Another example of a page would be the ‘Contact Us’ page.

CREATING PAGES AND POSTS

From your admin dashboard, hover on the little + sign at the top of the screen and you will get a couple of options as to what you can create on your new site. Select pages or posts depending on what you want to publish

Or you can also hover on posts or pages on the menu panel at the left side of the dashboard and click ‘Add new’.

WordPress uses something called a WYSIWYG editor (What you see is what you get). This means you get to type content as you would on any word processor and when you are done, there is a publish button to the right side of the screen. Click on it and publish your content.
